  36. StartGen optimizes some frequently performed procedures when working
  37. on the Internet, such as going to search pages to begin a search.
  38. By taking control of your start page, you add structure to the
  39. Internet experience and this helps minimize the number of decisions
  40. you must make each time you log on. Some bookmarks are used far
  41. more often than others, and StartGen allows you to place these
  42. in a place you can get to any time just by clicking your browsers'
  43. Home button. The bookmark summary feature also allows you to place
  44. a table of contents type summary at the beginning of your bookmark
  45. file which you can link to your start page for quick access.
  46. <P>
  47. A sample startpage can be viewed by pointing your browser to startgen.htm
  48. located in the directory you installed StartPage. The top part
  49. of the start page contains frequently used bookmarks organized
  50. by Category and Subject. The Step By Step portion of this article
  51. gives you instructions on how to customize these selections. Just
  52. beneath the bottom of this table is a "Start Page Help"
  53. button that takes you a mirror image of your start page that is
  54. linked to descriptions each item. Hit the Back button to return
  55. to your start page and select the "Bookmarks" link to
  56. see a sample bookmark summary generated by StartGen.
  57. <P>
  58. Shareware gives you a chance to try software before buying it.
  59. If you try a Shareware program and continue to use it, you are
  60. required to register it. You can do by completing the sending
  61. $19 as explained in the <A HREF="#PURCHASING" >registration section</A>

  121. <A NAME="INSTALLING"><B>INSTALLING</B></A><B> STARTGEN<BR>
  122. </B>StartGen will run on any version of Windows, with the possible
  123. exception of Windows 3.0. After downloading the sgen10.exe file,
  124. run it from within Windows and it will guide you through the installation
  125. process. Click on the StartGen icon to begin using the software.
  126. <P>
  127. <A NAME="STEPBYSTEP"><B>STEP BY STEP</B></A><B> INSTRUCTIONS</B>
  128. <OL>
  129. <LI>After installing, double Click the StartGen icon to launch
  130. the program.
  131. <LI>Click the "Show Bookmarks" button to display the
  132. bookmarks section.
  133. <LI>Click the Import Bookmarks button.
  134. <LI>Point to your Netscape bookmark file (such as c:\netscape\bookmark.htm)
  135. and select OK.
  136. <LI>Your bookmarks will then be loaded into the bookmark listbox.
  137. Note that actual bookmarks are indented slightly whereas folder
  138. names in your bookmark file are not.
  139. <LI>Double-click one of the bookmarks to add it to the currently
  140. selected Category and Subject.
  141. <LI>When the "Add Item" dialog appears, you may want
  142. to change the Item field to a shorter description to avoid cluttering
  143. up your start page. Click the OK button to finish adding the item.
  144. <LI>Select the Generate button and enter and assign a name to
  145. your start page file to be generated.
  146. <LI>Start your browser and open the generated start page. You
  147. should see the item you added in steps 6 and 7.
  148. <LI>Here's how to make this your new start page (the page that
  149. loads automatically each time you start your browser or whenever
  150. you click the "Home" button.:

  152. <LI>With Netscape, you specify your homepage using the "Appearance"
  153. tab from the dialog that appears when you select the "Options
  154. / General Preferences" menu options.
  155. <LI>Using IE, select the "Navigation" tab from the dialog
  156. that appears when you select the "View Options" menu
  157. options.
  158. </UL>
  159. <LI>Notice the "Start Page Help" link that appears below
  160. the main table. This takes you to a mirror of your start page,
  161. except that clicking on an item takes you to a description of
  162. that item, rather than to the link site itself. As you transfer
  163. more and more of your abbreviations into long term memory (where
  164. your phone# is stored), you will probably use this help feature
  165. less and less.

  169. <A NAME="GENBKMRKSUMMRY">GENERATING A BOOKMARK SUMMARY</A>
  170. <P>
  171. Return to StartGen, select the "Tools" menu option,
  172. and the "Summarize Bookmarks" submenu option. Fill in
  173. the selections, and click "Save Changes and Close".
  174. It is recommended that you check the box at the bottom of the
  175. form to have your bookmark summary updated each time you generate
  176. your start page. Optionally, the "Summarize Now" button
  177. can be used to create a bookmark summary at any time.<BR>
  178. <P>
  179. <A NAME="ADDSEINT">ADDING A NEW SEARCH ENGINE INTERFACE</A>
  180. <P>
  181. To add a new search engine interface, include everything between
  182. the FORM and /FORM tags and you should be ok. Study the html for
  183. the search engine interfaces that shipped with StartGen for more
  184. information.<BR>
